Happy Easter
I’m back in my exciting hometown of Mansfield, Ohio this Easter weekend, and it’s nice to be back. This morning I got to see a lot of familiar faces sitting in the pews of the church I grew up in. Most looked a little older than I remembered, but still many took time to smile or give that shoulder tap as they walked by at communion. I even got to say hello to an old friend who I hadn’t had the chance to talk to in several years. I was the basketball manager who used to “stretch” his basketball shorts out before every game.
I definitely think that I haven’t yet found that sense of community in my little corner of Indiana yet. It’s something that comes easier in a small city like Mansfield…It’s definitely something you see in small town America. I think I’ll get there eventually once the weather warms up and you start doing things outdoors and meeting those who live around you.
One thing I love about coming home is the church I grew up in is so beautiful. Marble altars, stained glass windows, high ceilings … truly old school. St. Peter’s is one of the few churches that managed to keep its communion rail after the Vatican II mandates. I think every pastor has suggested they remove it, but folks in the parish fight it off. I feel it’s more of a historical landmark than anything else now. I enjoy the character and history of these older houses of worship.
Anyway … have a Happy Easter … time to take a nap.
