It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a fair, let alone the State Fair. Sandy & I drive by the fairgrounds every day on our way to and from work…so it wasn’t going to take much to talk ourselves into going. Of course, two complementary tickets also happened to fall into my hands (thanks Marco, Sr.).

Fair Train arriving at Fisher Station
One of the cool things they do for the fair is the Fair Train. The Indiana Transportation Museum operates it between Fishers and the fairgrounds every day during the fair. It uses old Burlington Northern passenger cars. It was a nice ride to the fair.
Once we got to the fair, we hit the show barns. Why? Because we’re city kids and it’s interesting to see how kids still embrace the farming life. The pigs are always interesting…we saw the “World’s Largest Boar” – one fat pig. I felt sorry for the “World’s Second Largest Boar” it didn’t have anywhere near the same amount of crowds.

They really do butt heads!
After the pigs we stopped by the sheep barn, many of sheep had been sheered by the time we got there, many of them were wearing their blankets. (Only the pig barn was not air conditioned.) I snapped a photo of the two on the right who were butting heads and getting yelled at by their owners.
A little side note, it was kind of interesting that the families who raised theses animals would have a pen right next to their animals, all set up with chairs to hang out in during the day. Not what I expected.

Santa Gertrudis Cattle
When we got to the cattle barn we were quite surprised to see Santa Gertrudis cattle being shown and judged. The only reason we knew what kind of cattle Santa Gertrudis cattle were was because they were originally bread in South Texas on the King Ranch. We got to learn more than we ever wanted when we took the tour a few years ago.

Quack
We also saw ducks, chicken, turkeys, geese and rabbits. I had no idea there were so many different breeds. We also walked through some of the craft barns, 4H projects barns and all the other usual stuff you do at the fair.
Oh … and we also at a lot of DEEP FRIED food! Maybe it’s like this at all fairs these days, but Indiana seems to pride themselves on the amount of things you could get deep fried. We started off the day with fried pickle spears and also enjoyed some Hot Wisconsin Cheese.

Can you say heaven?
But the best part was the fried dessert! We could have chosen from so many different options including the traditional fried Twinkie or Ho-Ho. But the fair had more to offer including deep fried bananas foster cheesecake, fried Carmel lattes and fried brownies.
We settled on the place that served the fried cookie dough, but that’s not what we got. We got the combo which had a Snickers bar, two Oreos and a Reece’s Peanut Butter Cup … all fried. Damn they were good, but something you can only enjoy once every two or three years. After that we headed back to the train for the ride home.
